Program Description

The electrician's apprenticeship program is a five-year training program that consists of eight thousand hours of on-the-job training in addition to nine hundred hours of classroom instruction. 

Apprentices are paid while they work and learn.  Wages start at 40% of journeyman electrician’s wages and increase 5% every six months or one thousand hours.

How much does it cost?

The apprenticeship program pays for all instruction and training with an estimated cost of approximately $25,000.

However, there are a few costs that a student should anticipate. These typically add up to approximately $2500 over the five-year program. These include items such as:

  • Tools
  • Books
  • Transportation
  • Special clothing for harsh environments
  • Dues & Working Assessment

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 17 ½ years old to apply and 18 years old to enter the apprenticeship.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Have graduated from high school or passed the GED or an equivalent.

PROCEDURE TO APPLY FOR INSIDE ELECTRICAL WIREMAN APPRENTICESHIP

POSITION:

The Inside Electrical Wireman Apprenticeship is a five-year training program that consists of eight thousand hours on the job training in addition to nine hundred hours of classroom instruction. Classes are held four times per year, Monday thru Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (40 hours) once every nine to ten weeks, depending on holidays. In addition there are three 8 hour “study hall” sessions that equal up to 184 hours of classroom instruction per year. Apprentices are paid while they work and learn, with wages starting at forty (40%) percent of journeymen Inside Wireman electrician wages and increasing five percent every six months, or every one thousand hours. Current starting pay is negotiated through a Collective Bargaining Agreement, plus pension and medical/dental benefits.

DUTIES:

The Apprentice Electrician works directly under the supervision of and assists a qualified Journeymen Inside Wireman Electrician in installing or maintaining a variety of approved wiring methods for distribution of electrical light, heat, power, radio and signaling utilization systems in existing or new buildings under construction of residential, commercial and industrial occupancies; including street and highway lighting, traffic signal and other outdoor above and below grade installations.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be 17 ½ years old to apply and 18 years old to enter apprenticeship.
  • Have graduated from high school or passed the GED or an equivalent.
  • Have completed two semesters of high school algebra with a grade of “C” or better, or completed an equivalent post-high school algebra course or completed the NJATC math On-Line (WWW.ELECTRICALTRAININGALLAINCE .ORG/LEARNING/ONLINETECHMATH).
  • Provide an “official copy of your high school transcripts as proof of graduation. If you did not take algebra in high school you must also provide your College or Adult School Transcripts as proof of meeting the algebra requirement.
  • All Transcripts must be turned in on the date you make the application, no exceptions.
